What Is a PMHNP? Understanding Your Psychiatric Provider

If you've been referred to DLH Consulting or are looking for psychiatric care in the Dartmouth area, you may have noticed that our providers are listed as PMHNPs rather than psychiatrists. Many patients have questions about this — what does PMHNP mean, how does it differ from a psychiatrist, and does it affect the quality of care? Here's a clear, honest answer.

What Does PMHNP Stand For?

PMHNP stands for Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. PMHNPs are advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) who have completed graduate-level education specializing in psychiatric and mental health care — typically a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a psychiatric-mental health specialty.

What Can a PMHNP Do?

In Massachusetts, PMHNPs have full practice authority — meaning they can:

  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations
  • Diagnose mental health conditions
  • Prescribe and manage psychiatric medications independently
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests
  • Refer to other specialists as needed

They do not require physician supervision in Massachusetts.

How Is a PMHNP Different from a Psychiatrist?

Both PMHNPs and psychiatrists can diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe psychiatric medications. The primary difference is their educational pathway. Psychiatrists complete medical school followed by a 4-year psychiatric residency. PMHNPs complete nursing school followed by a graduate psychiatric specialty program. In practice, the day-to-day care for the vast majority of outpatient psychiatric conditions is equivalent — and multiple studies confirm comparable patient outcomes.

Why See a PMHNP Instead of a Psychiatrist?

The practical answer: access. The United States faces a significant shortage of psychiatrists, particularly in outpatient settings. In many areas — including the SouthCoast of Massachusetts — wait times for psychiatrists can stretch months. PMHNPs have substantially expanded access to quality psychiatric care. Many patients also appreciate the holistic, relationship-centered approach that characterizes nursing education.

Board Certification

Board-certified PMHNPs (PMHNP-BC) have passed the national certification examination through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), demonstrating the knowledge and competency required for advanced psychiatric practice.
