How to Get the Most Out of Your Telehealth Appointment

Research consistently shows that telehealth psychiatric appointments are just as effective as in-person visits for most conditions. The convenience is undeniable — no commute, no waiting room, no arranging childcare. But getting the most out of a telehealth appointment does require a little preparation. Here's how to set yourself up for a productive session.

1. Find a Private, Quiet Space

This is the single most important factor. You want a space where you can speak openly without being overheard or interrupted. A bedroom with the door closed works well. If you live with others, let them know you have a private appointment. Feeling genuinely private allows you to be honest with your provider — and honesty is the foundation of good psychiatric care.

2. Test Your Technology Beforehand

Log in to your provider's telehealth platform a few minutes early to test your camera, microphone, and internet connection. All DLH Consulting providers use secure video platforms accessible directly through your web browser — no downloads required. If joining from a phone, prop it at eye level rather than holding it.

3. Prepare a Medication List

Have a current list of all medications you take — psychiatric and non-psychiatric — including dosages and frequency. Over-the-counter medications, supplements, and herbal products can interact with psychiatric medications. Your provider needs the full picture.

4. Write Down What You Want to Discuss

Before your appointment, jot down: how you've been feeling since your last visit, any changes in mood, sleep, appetite, or energy, side effects you've noticed, and any specific questions about your medications or treatment plan. Appointments can feel short — a quick list ensures nothing important gets forgotten.

5. Be Honest — Even About the Hard Stuff

If your medication isn't working as well as it was, say so. If you've been skipping doses, mention it. If you've been drinking more than usual, your provider needs to know. Your provider can only help you with what you share.
