Using MassHealth for Mental Health Care: What You Need to Know
MassHealth — Massachusetts Medicaid — covers mental health services for eligible residents, including outpatient psychiatric care, medication management, and therapy. If you have MassHealth, you have access to the same quality mental health care as people with commercial insurance. Here's what you need to know.
What Mental Health Services Does MassHealth Cover?
MassHealth covers a wide range of outpatient mental health services including:
- Psychiatric evaluation (initial comprehensive assessment)
- Medication management follow-up appointments
- Individual therapy with licensed clinicians
- Telehealth appointments — covered at the same rate as in-person visits
For most MassHealth members, these services are available at no cost or minimal cost share. There is no deductible for mental health services under standard MassHealth.
Do I Need a Referral?
No. MassHealth members do not need a referral to access outpatient mental health services. You can contact DLH Consulting directly to begin the intake process.
What Is MBHP?
The Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership (MBHP) manages behavioral health benefits for standard MassHealth members. If your card shows MBHP for behavioral health, your mental health benefits are administered through MBHP. DLH Consulting accepts both MassHealth and MBHP.
What If I Have a MassHealth Managed Care Plan?
Some MassHealth members are enrolled in managed care plans such as Commonwealth Care Alliance, Wellsense, Fallon Health, or Tufts Health Plan. DLH Consulting accepts all of these plans. If you're unsure which plan you have, check your card or call MassHealth Member Services at 1-800-841-2900.
