What Is GeneSight Testing and Should You Get It?

Finding the right psychiatric medication can feel like trial and error — try a medication, wait 6 weeks, experience side effects, switch to another, wait again. For many people this process takes months or years. GeneSight testing was developed to take some of the guesswork out of it, and it's available at DLH Consulting.

What Is GeneSight?

GeneSight is a pharmacogenomic test that analyzes how your genes interact with specific medications. A simple cheek swab collects your DNA, which is then analyzed in a laboratory. The results reveal genetic variations that affect how your body processes psychiatric medications — including how quickly your liver metabolizes certain drugs, whether a medication may build up to high levels in your system, and which medications carry higher risk of specific side effects for you personally.

How Results Are Categorized

Medications are grouped into three categories based on your genetic results:

  • Use as directed — likely to work well at standard doses with your genetics
  • Moderate gene-drug interaction — may need dose adjustment or additional monitoring
  • Significant gene-drug interaction — may be less effective or cause more side effects for you specifically

Who Might Benefit from GeneSight Testing?

  • You've tried multiple medications without finding one that works
  • You experience significant side effects at standard doses
  • You have a family history of poor response to specific medications
  • You're starting psychiatric medication for the first time
  • You take multiple medications and want to understand potential interactions

Is It Covered by Insurance?

GeneSight is covered by most major insurance plans, including Medicare and many commercial insurers. Coverage depends on your specific plan and diagnosis. Your provider can help determine if GeneSight is appropriate and assist with prior authorization if needed.

An Important Caveat

GeneSight is a tool to inform prescribing decisions — not a definitive prescription generator. Your clinical history, other medications, lifestyle, and the specific nature of your symptoms all matter too. A good provider uses GeneSight results as one piece of a comprehensive clinical picture.
