What to Expect at Your First Psychiatric Appointment
What to Expect at Your First Psychiatric Appointment
Many patients tell us the anticipation of a first psychiatric appointment was more stressful than the appointment itself. Knowing what to expect helps.
Before You Arrive
Complete your new patient intake packet and privacy policy forms online through our patient portal at least 24 hours beforehand — this helps your provider review your history ahead of time.
The Evaluation (60 Minutes)
Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Your provider will review your current symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, family history, current medications, substance use, and your goals for treatment. This is a conversation, not an interrogation.
Your Provider Will Ask About…
- How long you’ve been experiencing your current symptoms
- What’s worked in the past and what hasn’t
- Your sleep, appetite, energy, and concentration
- Relationships, work, and daily functioning
- What you’re hoping to get out of treatment
You’ll Leave With a Plan
Your provider will share their clinical impressions and a proposed next step — starting a medication, ordering GeneSight testing, scheduling therapy, or a combination. You’ll have a chance to ask questions before deciding how to proceed.
A Few Things to Bring
- Photo ID and insurance card
- List of current medications with dosages
- Previous psychiatric or medical records if available
- Your honest self — that’s all your provider needs to start helping you
