Anxiety vs. Stress: How to Tell the Difference

If you've ever Googled "am I stressed or anxious?" you're not alone. The two can feel remarkably similar — racing heart, difficulty sleeping, constant worry, trouble concentrating. But they're distinct experiences with different causes, timelines, and treatment approaches. Understanding the difference matters, because the right support depends on getting it right.

What Is Stress?

Stress is a normal response to an external demand or pressure. A tight deadline. A difficult relationship. A financial setback. These are real, identifiable stressors — and the stress response they trigger is your body working as designed. Key features of stress:

  • Has a clear, identifiable cause
  • Resolves when the stressor resolves
  • Is proportionate to the situation
  • Is temporary by nature

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is different. It can exist without any identifiable trigger. It persists even when circumstances improve. It is often disproportionate to the actual threat. And it tends to interfere with daily functioning in ways that stress typically does not. Key features of anxiety:

  • May occur without a clear cause
  • Persists even after the situation resolves
  • Difficult to control despite recognizing it's excessive
  • Interferes significantly with daily life
  • Often involves "what if" thinking and anticipatory fear

Signs You May Be Experiencing Anxiety Rather Than Stress

  • You worry constantly even when things are going well
  • Physical symptoms — racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness — occur without an obvious trigger
  • You avoid situations because of fear of what might happen
  • Your worry feels impossible to turn off even when you try
  • Sleep problems persist even when nothing particularly stressful is happening
  • You seek reassurance repeatedly without it bringing lasting relief

When to Seek Help

If worry or anxiety symptoms are interfering with your work, relationships, or quality of life — regardless of whether you can name a cause — that is reason enough to reach out. Anxiety disorders are among the most common and most treatable mental health conditions. You don't have to live with it.
